STRASBURG HISTORY

According to one Cass County history, Strasburg was once known as Crawford's Fork. One thing is certain there was a small settlement on the town's site before it was christened Strasburg.

Before the Civil War there was a stage station located 1/2 mile southeast of the present city of Strasburg and was for a time a post office under the name of Cause Prairie. Later under the name of Big Creek. In the summer of 1865 the Missouri  Pacific Railroad was completed through Strasburg. In the winter of 1865 and 1866 Newton Doughtery established a small store in his residence on the northside of the railroad.

About 1869 John Flourney, the owner of the land out of which the town was carved, laid out the town and give it the name of Lucas. But because there already  being a post office in Missouri by that name, the post office could not accept the name. About that time 1870-71, the battle of Strasburg was fought between the French and Germans in the Franco-Prussian War. Mr Flourney selected the name of Strasburg which was accepted by the post office department.

About 1870 Mr, Flourney built a residence on the 40 acres lying across the road, south and east of the present church site. About this time there being some 2 or 3 stores  and blacksmith shop. The people of the town and surrounding area saw the need for a place of worship. Regardless of their church affiliation all joined in to build a place in which each individual could  meet and worship God according to the dictates of his own conscious, The following  took part:
Cumberland Presbyterian
Methodist
Baptist
Christian
Members of other denominations took part also but the foregoing organization had a sunday set apart for worship services but all took part in the Union Sunday School. The first church building was somewhat larger than the present structure being taller with a very steep roof.

In November 1879, a cyclone destroyed a goodly portion of the town and demolished the church and was claimed that not two boards of the orginal building were found fastened together after the storm.  Immediately after the disaster the good people again arose to the need of the community and by strenuous effort the  present building was errected on the old site.

As an organization, the Baptist did not join the reconstruction but elected to go themselves and build a church   on the north side of the railroad tracks, which they now occupy.
In 1919 electric lights were installed.
In 1954  a kitchen and primary Sunday School Room was added.
